WEEK 1 (August 23-27): 1) purchase the text book (Principles of Chemistry: A Molecular Approach by Nivaldo J. Tro, 2010), 2) successfully register for the free on-line "Mastering Chemistry" access. You will be using "Mastering Chemistry" for all your homework this semester. For instructions, click HERE. NOTE: ALL STUDENTS MUST USE MASTERING CHEMISTRY. If you did/do not buy the Tro textbook from the bookstore, you may purchase, using a credit card, the access code to use MASTERING CHEMISTRY (www.masteringchemistry.com. Click on “New Students) 3) begin the 1st homework assignment this week. By the way, it will be
graded for COMPLETENESS ONLY. It's due on Wednesday,
Sept 1 by 9 pm. Spent MUCH time on this as the skills will be used
throughout this course, and CHEM104. 5) Read Chapter 1. Make sure you work through each of the "examples" within the chapter...this is a good 'primer' for next homework assignment!
WEEK 2 (Aug 30 to Sept 3): 1) Log onto "MasteringChemistry" and complete "CHAPTER 1 ASSIGNMENT" (Due Date: Monday, Sept 6 by 9 pm). 2) HERE'S the link to the phthalate video that we watched in class. You are
not required to know this but it's interesting nonetheless! 3) Read Chapter 2. Make sure you work through each of the "examples" within the chapter...this is a good 'primer' for next homework assignment! 4) Print out the lecture notes for this week; they are available under "Class Notes" (http://faculty.philau.edu/ashleyj/class_notes2.htm)
WEEK 3 (Sept 7-10):
2) Read Chapter 3...Make sure you work through each "practice problem" within the chapter...this is a good 'primer' for the homework questions! 3) Print out the lecture notes for this week; they are available under "Class

WEEK 4 (Sept 13-17): 1) Log onto "MasteringChemistry" and complete "CHAPTER 3 ASSIGNMENT" (Due Date: Sunday, September 19 by 9 pm). NOTE: Some have randomized numbers...so if you are discussing a question with a friend, you may different numbers but the concepts to solve are the same! 2) If you have not already, read Chapter 3...Make sure you work through each "practice problem" within the chapter...this is a good 'primer' for the homework questions!
WEEK 5 (Sept 20-24): 1) Read Chapter 4 (see READING LIST webpage for exact details)...Make sure you work through each "practice problem" within the chapter...this is a good 'primer' for the homework questions next week! 2) Do the TOP THIRTY QUESTIONS in preparation for Test 1 on Friday, Sept 24th. THEN GO TO THE REVIEW SESSION (to discuss the solutions to these problems) in DOWNS 4 from 11 to noon on Thursday, Sept 23. 3) STUDY FOR TEST 1 on September 24 (CHAPTERS 1 to 3). There will be no assignment posted this week.
WEEK 6 (Sept 27 to Oct 1): 1) Read Chapter 4 and work through all 'in chapter problems'. A Mastering Chemistry will be posted sometime this week.
WEEK 7 (Oct 4 to Oct 8): 1) Print out Class Notes for Chapter 5 (Part 1 and 2) for this week. 3) Chapter 4 Mastering Chemistry Assignment is due Sunday, Oct 10th.
PLEASE WORK ON THIS THROUGHOUT THE WEEK; It's a long one! WEEK 8 (Oct 11 to Oct 15): 1) Read Chapter 5 (all of it).
WEEK 9 (Oct 18 to Oct 22): TEST 2 REVIEW SESSION: Tuesday, October 19 (11 - noon OR noon to 1; Downs 4) TEST 2 on Wednesday, October 20
WEEK 10 (Oct 25 to Oct 29): 1) Read Chapter 6 2) Start "CHAPTER 6 ASSIGNMENT" (Due Date: NOV 7 11 pm). 3) Want more Hess's Law questions (sure ya do!): Click HERE

By Friday’s class:
1) Watch the “SLIDE SHOW” of the attached powerpoint. There are several links to Websites (e.g., Youtube) that will have more explanation of the concepts. 2) I will explain LINE SPECTRA on Friday but please try to get a general idea of what it is from the powerpoint and your book! 3) Expect a mini-quiz on some GENERAL and BASIC aspects of the material (what is wavelength, what is frequency, how are they related, what is the electromagnetic spectrum, etc). 4) Here’s an example of a ‘straight forward calculation’ using frequency and wavelength: Calculate the frequency of visible light having a wavelength of 464.1 nm (HINT: you need to know the speed of light in meters per second, which is given in the powerpoint, and be able to convert nm to m!)

WEEK 13 (November 15 to November 19): 1) Extra Office Hour on November 15 from 11:30 to 12:30 in Hay201 2) Review Session with Peer Tutors Thurs, Nov. 18 (11 am to 12 in Downs 4) 3) TEST 3 on Friday, November 19th!!!!!!
