Undergraduate students following a Pre-Med curriculum would benefit by the opportunity to work with established professionals in a Biomedical area as part of their academic training. These proposed courses are an attempt to provide students with such an opportunity. These courses would be required of all science majors pursuing a Pre-Med curriculum. The Preceptorship Co-Ordinator
has a bank of approximately 35 preceptors ranging from biomedical research to
Physicians with family and specialized practices. Students will be encouraged to
identify a preceptor of their own, to be vetted by the Pre-Med Program Director
and Preceptorship Co-Ordinator as providing an active learning environment, or
may choose from the preceptorships already identified. The following are fields
that are deemed suitable:
Ø
A hospital
experience in which the student would accompany an intern or resident (including
on-call hours). Weekly reports would be required of the student, including
background research on the diseases or proced Ø
A
veterinary experience which would include animal husbandry, simple veterinary
techniques and assisting in the care of a variety of large and small animals.

A
dentistry experience, which would include accompanying the dentist during the
day-to-day practice and performing those tasks, which the dentist would assign.

An
experience in which the student would be assigned to either a pharmaceutical
company or a local biomedical industry. The preceptorship would include
laboratory techniques, preparation of protocols and standard operating
procedures as applies to the pharmaceutical industry Ø
An
experience in which the student would do laboratory work with a graduate student
at a local University. The supervisor of the grad student would evaluate the
contribution made by the student. |
