Eligibility

Several student eligibility criteria are similar namely, full time student status, completion of 30-60 credits and at least 15 credits completed at Philadelphia University. However, as the preceptorship experience is directed at students in the Pre-Med curriculum, who require a higher G.P.A. to attend biomedical graduate schools and will receive training in their field of interest accordingly the G.P.A. prerequisite is set at a minimum of 3.0. In addition, although preceptorships are aimed at students who have completed their sophomore year as summer courses an exceptional freshman student who also has a G.P.A of 3.0 or greater will also be encouraged to enroll.

Registration for the Course

The preceptorship experience is considered to be a contract between the student and external preceptor and as such requires a written agreement that also includes signatures from the Pre-Med Program Director and Preceptorship Coordinator.

Course Work

During the preceptorship period, students are expected to keep a log book of their experiences to be used in the execution of a final 5 to 10 page report on some aspect of the experience that most impressed them. Guidance on a choice of topic for the final report should be sought from either the Pre-Med Program Director or Preceptorship Coordinator within the first three weeks of beginning the preceptorship.

Attendance policy

The preceptorships are expected to be performed off campus and therefore will not be policed by Philadelphia University staff. Students are, however, required to be punctual and to behave in a professional and responsible manner, as they are operating in close proximity with busy healthcare and biomedical science professionals. The potential of the student as a future member of the biomedical field will also be under scrutiny during the preceptorship period and it is expected that they use this six-week experience to develop suitable professional skills to operate successfully in such an environment.

Grading Criteria

At the end of the six-week period, the external preceptor will provide a performance grade on the student, which will be combined with an evaluation of the written project made by the Pre-Program Director and Preceptorship Coordinator.
