Frequently the bride kidnappers are not afraid of punishment, despite the Article 155 of the Kyrgyz Criminal Code stipulates fine or imprisonment up to three years for the case.
As the deputy pointed, a lot of women often are not aware of their rights and crime responsibility for the forced marriage. “Besides, the girls are afraid of relatives and friends disgrace and live with kidnappers,” Rahimdinova said.

Yovanovitch a possibility to hold a scientific conference on bride kidnapping, the Ombudsman office representative informed the news agency "24.kg" today.
The Ombudsman and Marie L. Yovanovitch agreed upon the necessity "to put the issue on the top of agenda".
"The bride kidnapping is subject to comprehensive examination. It is important to reveal the number of criminal proceedings instigated, the number of complains filed to the law enforcement bodies. We still do not know how many lives were affected by this medieval phenomenon," the Ombudsman added.
The U.S. Embassy Democracy Commission will contribute to the Ombudsman office in holding the conference," Tursunbek Akun stressed. |
