Accessing the Academic Folder  and Home Directories When not in Labs

These instructions apply to computers in University Dorms, using Windows, that have direct connects to the University network.
(From other locations using modems, you must have a Virtual Private Network (VPN) configured as a "dial up network" connection in addition to your ISP connection..  Instructions for this are at:http://www.philau.edu/oit/guides/vpn/index.HTM   {Suggest that you print this from a lab computer.)

After setting up & using any shortcuts listed below:
If a dialog box requests your username, make sure you use:   student\  before your username.

Create a shortcut on your desktop to access the Academic Files.

1.- Right click anywhere in an empty space on your desktop.

2.- Slide cursor to “New”

3.- Move down to “Shortcut” and left click.

4.- In the dialog box “Create Shortcut” enter:  \\Lightning\apps\Academic    Then click “Next”

5.- Select a name such as:  Shortcut to Academic Folders.  Then click “Finish”

To access your student home directory

You should be able to access your home directory by double clicking on “My Computer”
It will be listed as a Network Drive with

      YourUsername on ‘athena\home’(H:)

If you also want a shortcut on your desktop:
    Right click on the icon,
Hold and drag to your desktop,
Release, slide down and left (regular) click on “create shortcut here”.

If this icon is not in My Computer:
Do steps 1, 2 & 3 as above (see 'to access the Academic Files' above).
Step 4.- enter:  \\Athena\Home\ your Username  (eg: Username:  Smith3)
Step 5.- In “Create Shortcut” dialog box enter something like:  Shortcut to Username on Server. Your Username, of course.

NOTE: Access to your home directory is protected by your password.  No one else can open it.
If another user logs into your computer, then their home directory will appear in My Computer.
To allow another user to set up a shortcut and access their home directory on your computer, that user must login with their password and follow the above steps.
