Course Description
The global economy has brought new dimensions to the management and operations of apparel companies. Today’s perspective includes anyplace and everyplace on this planet. The traditional trading boundaries of countries have evolved into regional blocs of nations. With this transformation have come new dynamics that require fresh approaches to the marketing and production of apparel products. This course will focus mainly on the sourcing strategies that apparel companies in this country have adopted to cope with the globalization and the changes that took place on January 1, 2005. We shall also explore the new global marketing opportunities that are now available to the United States apparel industry.
Course Procedures
Students are expected to read the assigned readings before class since the majority of the class time will be spent discussing the issues that covered in the materials. Students will also be asked throughout the semester to research additional information and to prepare a one page report about their findings In addition there will be a two 15 minute oral presentations, one about a developed country and one about a developing country. Finally there will be a position paper about an issue that is of interest to you. These are all described later in this syllabus. When possible, guest lecturers or field trips will be arranged to supplement the information provided by the text or class discussions.

Students are referred to the University Policy regarding academic integrity. There is zero tolerance for Cheating or Plagiarism. Any from of academic dishonesty will be reported to the proper authorities.
ORAL PRESENTATIONS
There will be two twenty minute PowerPoint presentations that analyze and discuss the opportunities and difficulties that might be encountered when sourcing from countries throughout the world. The first will concentrate on a developed country and the second will concentrate on a developing country.
At each presentation the following items must be submitted:
1. Fact Sheet that includes
- ethnic heritage,
- political and economic conditions,
- demographics,etc.
2. Presentation Summary that includes
- Cover Sheet with title, date, presentation number, country
- Abstract of presentation content, double spaced not to exceed 2 pages
- Annotated Bibliography according to MLA
Issues that should be covered in the Fact Sheets, Summary and Oral Presentations
- Country location
- Level of industrial development
- Infrastructure
- Political orientation
- Demographics and psychographics of the labor force
- Role in world trade of textiles and apparel
- Presence of trade restrictions
- Major trading partners
- Types of apparel and textiles that are imported and exported
- Types of technology that is available in the textile and apparel industries
- Nature of wholesale and retail industries
- A SWOT analysis of sourcing from this country

POSITION PAPER
Select an issue that you feel is important in sourcing in the global textile and apparel industries. After conducting research from at least 8 diverse sources, you should analyze the reliability of the content and breath of the perspective. Next you are asked to synthesize an economic, political, social, and/or a professional position/perspective on the issue. Finally you must present your views in a documented position paper and in an oral presentation
Requirements of Position Paper
- Title Page: title, author, statement of position, course number, date
- Abstract not to exceed 100 words
- Text should not exceed 15 double spaced pages
- Include Table of Contents, Introduction, Sub headings, Conclusion,
- Bibliography using MLA format

Requirements of Oral Presentation
- 8-10 minutes in length discussing main points of paper
- PowerPoint of minimum of 8 slides
- Be prepared to answer questions

ARTICLE REVIEWS
You will read and review an article from the textile and/or apparel trade press, daily newspaper, news magazine, business magazine, or internet. The article must be relevant to an assigned subject and published within the past six months. Your 1-2 page review with an attached copy of the article should include the following:
- key components of the article,
- relationship of the article to the textbook material,
- the specific audience to whom the periodical is directed,
- the importance of the periodical to its specific audience,
- proper MLA documentation
