12:05-12:55

February 21, 2000

Instructions:

1.         Write your answers directly on the test or, if additional space is required, write on additional sheets of your own paper (make sure your name is on each loose sheet if you do!)

2.                  If a question appears to be unclear or if you feel that not enough information is provided, clearly state your interpretation of the question and any assumptions which you feel you must make in order to answer the question.

3.                  Get to the point and be brief...you only have 50 minutes!

Total Number of Points: 56

A.              COMPARE AND CONTRAST the following pairs of terms (4 points each, 12 total)

A1.            Commensalism versus Mutalism

A2.      Primary versus Secondary Succession

A3.      Habitat versus Niche

B                SHORT ANSWER (Total of 24 Points)

B1.B.  The element PLATINUM has an atomic number of 78 and an atomic mass of 195. (6 points)

How many protons are in one atom of this element? ______

How many neutrons are in one atom of this element?______

How many electrons are in one atom of this element?______

If an electron is added to a neutral platinum atom, will the resulting ion be positively or negatively charged?_____________

Where are the neutrons of an atom located? _______________________________

Where are the electrons of the atom located? ______________________________

B2.       You have traded your pens and papers for a hoe and basket of seeds.  Yes, you have become a farmer.  Downside is, your crop seems to be the favorite food of an insect.  Without the use of pesticides, propose FOUR ways in which you will attempt to get rid of the pests (and ultimately save your crop). (4 points)

B3.       Let’s assume you are an altruistic preservationist and you are standing in front of an forest.  Write a short statement regarding what should be done with that forest that would clearly reveal your altruistic preservationistic viewpoint.  (2 points)

B4.       List THREE categories of toxic chemicals that we discussed in class (e.g., carcinogens) and provide the target organ or process in which they interfere.  (6 points)

B5.       You have just finished a huge helping of striped bass.  Your L121 professor suddenly appears (yes, I’m everywhere!) and explains that you have also ingested a potentially dangerous amount of a certain toxin that bioaccumulated in the bass.  You begin to explain to your professor that organisms such as yourself have mechanisms to deal with these toxins.  Describe, using sentences, TWO ways that your body may attempt to minimize the toxic effects of the ingested toxin.  (4 points)

B6.       In a sentence, what is respiration?  Complete the balanced chemical equation representing respiration. (5 points)

C6H12O6 + 6 _____    ®   6 _____   +     6 ______ + released energy

B7.            Humans derive several benefits from using pesticides (e.g., disease control, crop protection).  However, there are problems.  List FOUR potential problems associated with the use of pesticides. (4 points)

B8.            Describe, using complete sentences, THREE ways in which humans benefit from biodiversity.  (3 points)

C         IT’S TIME FOR JEOPARPY !!!!! (2 points each; Total of 20 points)

(No need to phrase the answer in the form of a question though)

C1.      The Delaware River is a classic example of this type of aquatic biome in which salt water mixes with freshwater in a semi-enclosed area.______________

C2.      The title of the book by Rachel Carson documenting the potential environmental effects of pesticides such as DDT.____________________________

C3.      The biome that boasts the greatest biodiversity. __________________

C4.      The two essential properties that toxic substances must have in order to biomagnify. __________________ and __________________

C5.            Pesticides which destroy the eggs of reptiles would fall into this class. _______________

C6.      The African veldt, the South American pampas, the Russian steppes, and the North American Great Plains are all considered to be this general type of biome. _________________

C7.      This biome typically has low moisture and precipitation levels (less than 10 cm per year of rainfall). _________________

C8.            Organisms living in this specific kind of biome are susceptible to high u.v. radiation, hot day-time temperatures, and ‘thin’ air. _________________

C9.            Ecosystems in which the land surface is saturated or covered with water at least part of the year. ____________________

C10.             Organisms of low trophic levels (e.g., insects, annual plants) use a logistic strategy of growth. True or False? _________________

BONUS QUESTION:

DDT and other chlorinated hydrocarbons are said to be ‘endocrine disruptors’.  In your own words, what does this mean?  (2 points)
