increasingly bureaucratic and rigid and less capable of adaptation and
innovation.” Imperialism in Easter Europe: demonstrations met with military force, vast differences in standards of living wit the West demonstrations in E. Germany since 1953 Poland (1956, 70), Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Albania, Czechoslovakia(1968), Romania “the resources of Easter Europe used on a massive scale to help rebuild the Soviet Union” 1980 Solidarity, a labor union in Poland 1988-1989 withdrawal of Soviet armed forces (military protection) in Central Europe 1989 fall of Berlin Wall 1991: Communists attempted to overthrow the USSR Pres.Gorbachev because of his Glasnost (loosening political controls and allowing greater freedom of expression)policies- they lost but Gorbachov later resigned and in 1992 the newly independent states began shifting to free markets.
