SCOTT A. OGBURN

Adjunct Professor

Adjunct Professor Scott A. Ogburn has a Master of Architecture degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a B.A. in History from the University of Virginia. He has been teaching either as a Visiting Assistant Professor or Adjunct Professor for over twelve years at Philadelphia University and Lehigh University, both in Foundation Design Studio and Computer-Aided-Design courses that are integrated into the studio. Some of the innovative design projects he has originated include: a Sacred Space as an Astronomical Observatory, a House for a Sculptor/Astronomer, a Symbolic Mandala, a Formal French Garden, a Froebel Block exercise for the computer, a Golden Rectangle exercise based on the Fibanacci series, a Sacred Chalice, and a Unique Advertising Agency.

Recently, he has lectured on the influence of Astronomy on Architecture, 'Temporality of Architecture in the Sacred Landscape' at both Savannah College of Art and Design and Lehigh University. His Master's Thesis, studying the use of astronomy in the design process, is titled, 'Bryn Myrrdin, Temple in Time'. This Thesis involves the design of a two-part, non-denominational Temple in the mountains of West Virginia with major elements of the design marking the solstices and equinoxes on the horizon and in the Temple complex for both the sun and moon. This Temple is designed as a center for conferences on world peace.

In addition to studies of Astronomy and Sacred Architecture, Professor Ogburn has research interests in the Phenomenology of Architecture expressing longing for a sense of place in the cosmic and natural landscape. Other research interests include Sacred Geometry, studies of natural light, the influence of water on Architecture, film and Architecture, environmentally Sustainable Architecture and Visionary Architecture for communities of the future. Professor Ogburn also has an architectural design practice and recently completed a vacation house in the Poconos for a client.
