Prerequisites Admission to the MS in Sustainable Design Program or admission to the Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Design
Description This course introduces students to materials and processes suitable for use in green buildings. Materials and processes consistent with LEED scoring will be explored and analyzed.
Objectives The primary objectives of this course are:
• To understand the basic concepts, principles and theories associated with the embodied energy and life-cycle of materials and materials processing
• To understand methods of assessing and evaluating new materials to determine sustainability qualities.
• To develop a procurement evaluation criteria for sustainable materials
• To understand the larger issues (global warming, ozone depletion, etc.) associated with green materials and their use in buildings.
• To appreciate the economics of green materials in a holistic mode
• To apply life cycle analysis (LCA) to materials and methods.

Procedures The course will consist of lecture and studio where the students will be exposed to a range of information addressing the pedagogical objectives (above) and explore application of the materials to achieve a phenomenological understanding of the materials and their potential uses.
Attendance Any student who has more than three unexcused absences during the semester will have their grade lowered by one letter grade. For example if a student earned a “B” in the course, but missed three classes, their final grade will be a “C.” If a student has four unexcused absences during the semester, they will not pass. Three late arrivals constitute one absence. A student will be considered late if they arrive 15 minutes after class begins without an excuse.
Archives Philadelphia University reserves the right to keep designated student work. If selected, your work will become part of the permanent archives. Student’s will be given the opportunity to photograph their projects are collected for archiving.
Plagiarism The Faculty of Philadelphia University takes academic integrity seriously. Instances of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated, and students violating the University’s academic integrity policy will be subject to appropriate sanctions. The academic integrity policy is published in the University’s Student Handbook and is also available in the Deans’ offices and in the Office of Academic Affairs. Sometimes plagiarism is unintentional, but it is wrong nonetheless, and ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse. Plagiarists misrepresent the ideas, words, or work that rightfully belongs to another as their own. The proper use of the ideas, words, or work of another requires that you acknowledge your source: quite simply that you give your audience or reader all the information needed to read or view the original.
